AI Workout Generation & Enrichment
The AI system provides two main capabilities: full programme generation (AI creates entire training cycles from scratch) and enrichment (AI adds warm-ups and coaching notes to your existing workouts). Both are governed by system prompts in the AI Prompt Store.
Generation modes
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| AI Designed | The AI creates everything from scratch based on your parameters (duration, equipment, skill level, focus areas) using a multi-pass pipeline. |
| Coach-Led Import | You supply the core programming via paste, CSV, or XLSX. The AI fills in warm-ups and coaching notes during the Enrich step. Your prescriptions are preserved verbatim. |
Coach-Led Import pipeline (Upload → Parse & Fix → Enrich → Review → Publish)
The Coach-Led workflow is a multi-step stepper:
- Upload — Download the official Bliply Programme Import Template (.xlsx), fill in the yellow cells for each training day, then drop the completed file back in. This is the only supported import method — pasting text, CSV files, and free typing are no longer accepted. The uploader checks every required column header before parsing, so any renamed or missing columns are rejected up-front with a clear error. See the dedicated "Programme Import Template (XLSX)" article for a full column-by-column walkthrough.
- Parse & Fix — Movements are fuzzy-matched against your component library. Unrecognised names can be corrected with suggestions and the system learns aliases over time. Days with two or more strength/skill movements stay flagged as Fix until you group them (Superset, Tri-set, Mega-set, Complex, A-B-C) or confirm No grouping.
- Enrich — AI generates warm-ups and coaching notes for every day. Output structure, length, and tone come entirely from the active system prompt — no per-generation toggles.
- Review — Preview all days with a start date picker, make inline edits, re-run enrichment if needed, and check quality scores.
- Publish — Commit to the database. Unfinished work is saved as a programme_draft and can be resumed from a persistent banner on the Workouts page.
AI Designed pipeline (multi-pass)
The full AI generator uses a multi-pass pipeline powered by a guided AI tool-calling workflow:
- WOD / Conditioning Pass — Generates the conditioning element for each day (AMRAP, EMOM, For Time, etc.) with correct scoring and time caps.
- Strength / Skill Pass — Creates primary strength or skill work, respecting progressive overload across the cycle.
- Session Assembly Pass — Combines all elements into a complete session with warm-up, teaching points, transitions, and cool-down blocks. Validates total session length (~60 minutes).
Preview → edit → commit workflow
By default, the generator uses a "Preview before saving" mode:
- Generate — Configure your cycle parameters and click Generate.
- Preview — Review each day in the Preview Panel.
- Inline edit — Modify workout titles, descriptions, and individual components directly in the preview.
- Commit all — Save every day as real workout records in the database.
Movement library integration
The AI is provided with your gym's component library (plus the platform-wide library) as an approved movement list. This ensures:
- Generated exercises match your gym's naming conventions exactly
- Consistent terminology across all generated programmes
- Benchmarks (e.g. "1RM Back Squat", "Fran", "Grace") are correctly referenced and fetched verbatim
- New movements introduced by the AI are automatically added to your library upon commit / publish
Enrichment (warm-ups & coaching notes)
Enrichment can be triggered per-workout from the editor (AI Enrichment dropdown), per-day inside the Coach-Led Import Enrich step, or in bulk from the Workouts list page.
Single source of truth: the AI Prompt Store
Warm-up structure, length, coaching tone, and style all come from the active system prompts. There are no separate warm-up templates, no style toggles, and no per-generation time cap. If you need a different feel (e.g. RAMP, express, mobility-led), the platform team can publish an additional prompt variant in the AI Prompt Store and gyms can select it.
Warm-up variety (recent history window)
To prevent repetitive warm-ups, the AI analyses the last 50 workouts from your gym's recent programming. Recently used movements are automatically avoided and fresh alternatives are substituted. This runs silently in the background — you don't need to configure anything.
Enrichment edit tracking
Every time a coach manually edits AI-generated warm-ups or coaching notes, the change is logged in the enrichment edit log. This gym-scoped audit trail helps the platform team tune AI prompts based on real coaching preferences.
Coaching notes & warm-ups output
Each generated day includes:
- Warm-up block — Tailored to the day's movements, with variety enforced via recent history
- Coaching notes — Technique tips, common faults, and modification options
- Scaling options — Suggested scaling for different athlete levels
- Stimulus notes — Target intensity, intended feel, and pacing guidance
Note: Teaching blocks, stimulus cards, and warm-ups are visible to staff only — they are stripped from the member app and public website views.
Superset & complex formatting
The generator handles advanced workout structures:
- Superset A/B blocks — Paired exercises with "Movement A -" / "Movement B -" labels
- Descending rep schemes — e.g. 21-15-9, 10-8-6-4-2
- EMOM / E2MOM / EOMOM formats — Correct interval notation and timing
Validation & quality
The AI enforces automatic quality checks:
- Session duration validated to approximately 60 minutes
- Movement count limits per section
- Barbell Bench Press flagged in WOD/conditioning tracks (safety rule)
- 5-retry strategy with exponential backoff for API reliability
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Generation stalls or fails | Check the generation job status in the Workouts page. Failed days can be retried. The system retries API errors up to 5 times automatically. |
| Wrong exercise names | Edit inline in the Preview Panel before committing. Adding correct names to your component library improves future generations. |
| Warm-ups feel repetitive | The system automatically avoids movements used recently. If output is still too similar, ask the platform team to review and update the warm-up system prompt. |
| Warm-ups don't match gym style | Pick a different prompt variant at the point of generation, or request a new variant from the platform team — warm-up style is governed entirely by the AI Prompt Store. |
| Missing warm-ups or coaching notes | Ensure enrichment is triggered (AI Enrichment button in editor, Enrich step in Coach-Led Import, or bulk action). Check that your gym has an active AI API connection. |
| Workouts saved without review | Toggle on "Preview before saving" in the generator dialog. This is the default but can be toggled off. |
